Artist Statment

So to start my name is Whitney,

no not Britney,

Whitney like Whitney Houston…

As you can tell Im pretty used to saying this, I actually think that if I didn't hear it often I would truly have to question my week. So now that we’ve established that; YES! I was named after the legendary Whitney Houston and I want to believe for good reason. At a young age growing up in Miami (insert welcome to miami theme song music) in a Dominican household, music constantly filled my home and lifestyle. From the different musical styling from both of my cultures, I knew music would be a love that no one could break. Music is one of my biggest influences whenever I feel the need to express myself in a creative form. I studied dance for years and even made a fake girl group with my cousins named Sky Blue. We would perform all the time (mostly for our family or at church talent shows) but even then I knew music had so much more depth then just what you heard. I grew up in the early 90s were Nicktoons and MTV were the only two channels that really existed, so music videos and television was pretty much all I could ever talk about...come to find out some things never change. But back then, music videos were intertwining cartoons and digital elements that I found to be groundbreaking, who would've thought that watching Paula Abdul’s Opposites Attract would open up my eyes to a life I never came back from. After moments like that and Michael Jackson's Scream video, I went into video storyboarding...buttttt only in my head. I could listen to a new song or any song without seeing the video and already envision on how I would create the storyline or how things would appear if I directed or produced the video. It always makes me laugh when the video is actually released because I always think that the one i’ve created mentally was way better. So I decided to take my interest and apply them into media studies. Im hoping to take away as much as I can in bringing my thoughts into an actual reality. So yeah, I think my parents had a good idea on what they were doing when they called me Whitney.
